Eating is nourishment for our bodies and our spirits. When we eat certain foods, we have neurotransmitters that are related to pleasure released into our system. Sometimes—as is the case with a sugar and fat combination—these neurotransmitters are released as soon as the food hits our tongue. Why? There were times in our evolutionary history when we might not have had access to food for many days at a time. Our bodies developed a very powerful reward system, so that when we did see available food, we would go after it and consume it! Our brains have not yet adapted to the reality that most of us do not experience that type of extreme scarcity. This is one of the reasons so many of us struggle to lose or maintain our weight.
